Alton Sunday Clothing Swap Set

ALTON — A pop-up clothing swap is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, in the ballroom of the Mineral Springs Mall at 301 E. Broadway, Alton.

To participate, people can bring in gently used clothing, accessories and shoes to exchange for as many new items as they can. Early return is 4-6 p.m. Saturday, April 30; attendees must enter through the side door on the lower level which faces Alton Street.

The entry fee is $5 if you bring clothes to swap or $10 to attend empty-handed. Leftover clothing will be donated to local charities. Participants can also bring fabric in any condition (such as used clothes, pillows, blankets, etc.) which will be recycled by Remains Inc.

According to Sara McGibany, executive director of Alton Main Street, a needs assessment conducted by the organization revealed that additional clothing stores and resale stores are in high demand by community members. Pop-up shops are temporary retail and restaurant establishments in underutilized commercial spaces that provide a tangible way to test the market. A series of pop-up shopping and dining events are underway.

“In addition to its environmental and community benefits, the Clothing Swap increases foot traffic for the rest of Broadway’s businesses,” McGibany said. “I hope attendees win lots of goodies at the event and spend the money they’ve saved on other stores and restaurants while they’re in the neighborhood.”
