According to two sources cited by Reuters Friday. Additionally, CATL is in negotiations to open a plant to supply products to BMW and Ford, while the potential plant location includes South Carolina and Kentucky. CATL declined to comment on the matter.

According to one of the sources, the aim of the potential South Carolina plant is to start production of batteries in 2026, when BMW is already a CATL customer.

The investment would mark the Chinese company’s first production in the United States, the world’s second largest automotive market.

Robin Zeng, chairman of CATL, said in an online briefing yesterday that due to the demand for localized production, the company is discussing with all major overseas customers how to implement the services.

Since 2018, CATL has faced fierce competition with Korean companies for the designation of overseas customers’ projects. Its mass production and delivery started in 2021, which made foreign customers pay attention to CATL’s products, technologies, delivery and services. Robin Zeng said overseas customers expect the company to increase its supply ratio and become its main supplier from the next fixed cycle, i.e. after 2026 or even from 2035.

On March 19, reports surfaced that CATL was planning to spend $5 billion to build a factory in North America, with a targeted annual production capacity of 80 GWh to provide services to customers like Tesla.
