Man Utd ‘submitted huge Darwin Nunez swap offer’ as transfer details emerge | Soccer | sport

Manchester United have apparently tabled a huge swap offer for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez. The Uruguay international was in exceptional form last season, scoring 34 goals in all competitions. And, now, a summer move alongside Erik ten Hag seems to be getting closer.

Manchester United lose Edinson Cavani this summer, while the future of Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial is also shrouded in uncertainty.

And, now, Portuguese outlet Correio de Manha claims United have made a big offer for Nunez.

It is reported that an offer of £64m up front has been submitted, with the Red Devils also willing to pay a further £17m in bonuses.

And, what’s more, they apparently included Andreas Pereira in their offer.

Until recently, the Brazil international was expected to join Flamengo on a permanent basis – having spent the last two years there.

But, now he might be ready to move to Portugal instead.

With Pereira valued at around £8.5m, that means the overall transfer cost would be around £90m.

And it looks like United are pushing ahead with their plans to sign Nunez, who is considered one of the hottest talents in European football right now.

Historically, the Red Devils have a good record when it comes to signing Portuguese players.

In 2003, they landed Cristiano Ronaldo, with the Portugal international winning three league titles in his first spell at Old Trafford.

Nani wasn’t bad either, with the forward winning four titles himself when he left Sporting Lisbon four years later.

Although Anderson failed to fulfill his potential, he was still a good asset during Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in the dugout.

Likewise Marcos Rojo under Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, with the Argentina international playing a key role as United won three trophies under his two former bosses.

Victor Lindelof has been a solid, if unspectacular, player for United since leaving Benfica five years ago.

And Nunez will hope to be a success story at Old Trafford if, as expected, he ends up moving to the Premier League.

Should a move materialize, he could challenge Ronaldo for a starting spot.

But it’s also possible he could be deployed alongside the 37-year-old, who scored 24 goals in all competitions last season.

When it comes to a potential jersey number, there are two notable options.

The No.9 is set to become vacant, with United eager to get Martial off their books after seven inconsistent years at Old Trafford.

And with Greenwood suspended, No. 11 is another possibility.

Previously carried by club legend Ryan Giggs, United stars have since struggled with that burden of responsibility.

But Nunez, given his goalscoring exploits for Benfica, seems to have the talent to play at the highest level.

Meanwhile, former United star Diego Forlan has urged his former side to land Nunez this summer.

“I think he’s a very good player, a good boy who is doing very well at Benfica and having a good season,” he said recently.

“It’s not just the Portuguese league where he’s doing well, but also the Champions League.

“He’s a player with a lot of potential and he could fit into Manchester United.

“But obviously everyone has to be patient, even if they get better with more and more experience.”
