Josh Wolff has spent years learning from current United States Men’s National Team Head Coach Gregg Berhalter as an assistant for the National Team and the Columbus Crew SC. Austin FC first-year head coach Wolff is hoping to put the tutelage on Sebastian Berhalter, Gregg’s son and the new player to the Austin FC senior squad.
Berhalter, a 19-year-old central midfielder, has been on loan from Columbus Crew SC for the 2021 season, with Austin FC having the option to trade in his permanent rights at the end of the season. An Additional General Allowance (GAM) could be awarded to Columbus Crew SC based on its performance.
“I am delighted with this new opportunity and look forward to the challenge,” Berhalter said in the team press release. ” I am excited to begin. ”
Berhalter reached the first-team ranks at Columbus with four starts in nine appearances for the club in 2020. He played for the Crew SC Academy from 2014 to 2019, registering 97 starts in 103 appearances for various age groups under crew crest.
He played the 2019 season as the North Carolina Tar Heel, making 16 freshman appearances. He signed with the Crew as a local player ahead of the 2020 season.
“Sebastian is a young and talented midfielder who will add depth to our growing squad,” said Claudio Reyna, Austin FC sporting director. “We are delighted that he is joining the club and look forward to (of) his continued professional development with Austin FC.”
Berhalter is the 24th player on Austin FC’s senior list. He joins a midfielder made up of Alex Ring, Tomas Pochettino, Daniel Pereira, Diego Fagundez, Ulises Segura and Jared Stroud. 5-foot-9 Sebastian was born in London, England, but played three games domestically for the U.S. Under-16 team in 2017.
Austin FC added Slovenian left-back Zan Kolmanic early in the day. The club started voluntary training as a team this week with a preseason officially starting March 8. The MLS season begins the weekend of April 17 with schedules not yet published.
